Chapter 1
1. What problems or conflicts are presented in chapter one? Tao needing to find a rabbit is an obvious one; identify at least two more.
Many of the conflicts in this story is that the hunters are not getting enough food for everyone.Another conflict is that no one care for Tao except for Kala.
2. Predict the resolution of each conflict.A resolution for the first problem that I wrote is that they can Go around with more hunters and spend more time hunting.
Chapter 2
What two important events happen in this chapter? Another important event is that Tao has not yet found a rabbit
and he is not able to go back to the hut until he finds a rabbit.Another one is that Tao goes into a place where people
say that there is evil spirits.
Chapter 3
1. What do Tao and Ram learn to do together? They learn to hunt together and get enough food for each other.
2. What decision does Tao tell Volt?Tao tells Volt that he will leave the clan and go his own way with Ram.
3. Look at Tao's decisions and actions from Volt's perspective. Pretend you are Volt. Write a first person paragraph explaining how you feel.I am really mad at Tao because he is leaving us behind because we dont want a wolf dog in the clan.So now
he has left and who knows if he will come back.I am really dissapointed in Tao.
Chapter 4
In a good paragraph, describe Tao's mother. Start with an interest grabber. Then write your topic sentence. Give three details or examples to support your thesis. Use a quotation from the chapter.
Taos mom really cared about Tao.She was a really caring ,and loving. She protected Tao all the time. And Kala cared
about Tao's mom and Tao.Tao's mom died and Tao stayed with Kala for 14 years after his mother had died.He never
got to see his mother as he grew up.
Chapter 5
1. Which two animals does Tao try to draw?Tao tried to draw a horse and Ram the wolf dog.
2. Which is easier for him and why?Ram the wolf dog was the easiest to draw because he had Ram to guide him.
Chapter 6
1. Graybeard realizes that Tao has broken two taboos of his clan. What are they? That he hunts with a wolf dog
and that he goes to hunt at the slough.
2. Which taboo doesn't he know about yet?He doesnt know that that Tao paints images in the caves.
3. Graybeard describes Volt differently than we have. What aspects of Volt's character is Graybeard acknowledging?
Graybeard describes Volt as a good man.
Chapter 7
Write your reaction to the last paragraph in the chapter. Do you agree or disagree with Graybeard? Is what he says true for those times, but not now? Or, is the reverse true: was it not true then, but true now?
I disagree with Graybeard because drawing isn't anything bad, you should be allowed to draw.
Chapter 8
An important theme in this novel is that people should follow their dreams and do what they believe is right, even if they don't follow their
society's expected ways.
The author examines this theme in a stone age setting. Imagine a similar situation today.
What situation did you imagine? I imagined a women joining the army and having kids that wouldn't
be fair.
In the situation you imagined, should the person follow his or her dreams or should they follow society's rules? Give your opinion. If she will like to have kids than mabey she should follow society's rules. Only
men should be allowed to join the army
Chapter 9
Why do you think Graybeard changed his mind? I think he changed his mind because he knows how much Tao likes to draw and I think also because he likes teaching.
What does this tell you about his character? That he is really nice and likes helping people.
Chapter 10
1. What are the "mountains-that-walk"?The mountains that walk were groups of animals.
2. What almost happened to Tao? Tao almost got killed.
